With new solution from Nokia Siemens Networks data transfer rate grows to 592 kbps almost doubling standard EDGE bandwidth. The solution is a software upgrade so it won't take a lot of effort to install. New equipment would have been a greater problem. Anyway, Nokia Siemens Networks’ Dual Carrier EDGE solution is based on the 3GPP release 7 standard, which means 592 kbps might be not its top speed. Project under name EGPRS 2B is up to redouble EDGE speeds to 1.2 Mbps download and 473 Mbps upload.

These words are pleasant to hear, but there is something to consider before we can say Nokia Siemens Networks are doomed to be successful. First of all I'm afraid that Downlink Dual Carrier will fall into a category of really great solutions, but not hurrying to its production unit. There are a lot of gadgets on the web that are praised and expected by everyone, but forgotten and never seen again in a short time. I hope Nokia and Siemens will not let this happen, and I hope they will start upgrading EDGE networks soon, because 3G is going forward at a steady gait.

The last month of each year is not probably the time for only big releases, so people could feel themselves free to choose New Year presents for their friend and relatives, but it is also the good time for manufacturers nevertheless to get busy with what was not perfect thru the past year. The case in which we are mentioning it is the latest Nokia N96 firmware update v12.043 available from today's morning December 08. And it is a good move from Nokia I suppose, because even within a few hours from the moment after first lucky N96 users have installed v12.043 to it, the web started filling up with positive comments. Overall firmware v12.043 made N96 faster and more reliable with plus 45 free MB RAM after boot. The updating pack has 120 MB at Nokia official web site, or over-the-air it would be only 3 MB.

At the moment Nokia N82 cost about 300-400 Euros and with this award it can still in markets much, much longer. By the way, maybe this is a sign that N96 should use Xenon flash too ?
