Nokia Siemens Networks bring EDGE closer to 3G

Cooperation between biggest brands in mobile phone industry is a rear thing to happen, but it does from time to time, and the reasons for it should be really very important. Once cooperation takes place, end user is going to feel it soon with more possibilities and/or lower tariffs. What could be a reason for Nokia and Siemens to interact with each other? – Enhancing EDGE networks, which may sound odd because EDGE is nothing but Enhanced Data rates for GSM [Global] Evolution. Enhancing enhanced rates may be a complicated job but Nokia and Siemens did it well. They have almost reached to double EDGE speed for mobile phones and are looking forward for even more results in nearest future.

If there are any questions about what EDGE is, a simple answer can be that EDGE is a milestone between GSM and 3G. GSM is a wide spread mobile network, but it doesn't let its users to enjoy modern mobile Internet features. 3G does in turn, but it takes mobile network operators to invest a lot of money in new gears and qualified staff. EDGE provides 384 kbps data transfer speed on the GSM equipment so mobile Internet providers are happy to use it. However 384 kbps is obviously not enough for mobile video steaming, downloads and especially uploads.

With new solution from Nokia Siemens Networks data transfer rate grows to 592 kbps almost doubling standard EDGE bandwidth. The solution is a software upgrade so it won't take a lot of effort to install. New equipment would have been a greater problem. Anyway, Nokia Siemens Networks’ Dual Carrier EDGE solution is based on the 3GPP release 7 standard, which means 592 kbps might be not its top speed. Project under name EGPRS 2B is up to redouble EDGE speeds to 1.2 Mbps download and 473 Mbps upload.

These words are pleasant to hear, but there is something to consider before we can say Nokia Siemens Networks are doomed to be successful. First of all I'm afraid that Downlink Dual Carrier will fall into a category of really great solutions, but not hurrying to its production unit. There are a lot of gadgets on the web that are praised and expected by everyone, but forgotten and never seen again in a short time. I hope Nokia and Siemens will not let this happen, and I hope they will start upgrading EDGE networks soon, because 3G is going forward at a steady gait.

Nokia releases firmware v12.043 for N96 smartphone

The last month of each year is not probably the time for only big releases, so people could feel themselves free to choose New Year presents for their friend and relatives, but it is also the good time for manufacturers nevertheless to get busy with what was not perfect thru the past year. The case in which we are mentioning it is the latest Nokia N96 firmware update v12.043 available from today's morning December 08. And it is a good move from Nokia I suppose, because even within a few hours from the moment after first lucky N96 users have installed v12.043 to it, the web started filling up with positive comments. Well done for Nokia as it may now expect better profits from smartphones in the "hot" season of winter. So, let's see what N96 firmware v12.043 is all about.

First of all mind you that the latest N96 v12.043 firmware is not up to bring too many of new features. As we started with Nokia was not perfect with its flagman N96 model, now is a good time to fix it along with many other Nokia devices which get their firmware updates regularly. That is exactly the way it should be and it doesn't mean that Nokia puts up for sale underfulfilled gadgets. In the meanwhile, the updated devices show a bit more of what was expected, not only patches for obvious bloopers. More concrete on N96 with v12.043, it now has: camera performance update. It shows in less motion blur and color bloom effect. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi have enhanced interoperability. Messaging fix doesn't alter SMS text into MMS if case when the SMS was sent to more than 20 numbers. With an additional download, compatibility with Nokia Email service is available. And, except for fixing crushing applications, many more changes in screen settings, themes and ringtones, etc.

Overall firmware v12.043 made N96 faster and more reliable with plus 45 free MB RAM after boot. The updating pack has 120 MB at Nokia official web site, or over-the-air it would be only 3 MB.

Nokia N96 - Review

Newest Nokia N-series product - Nokia N96. Don’t laugh if you hear that someone calls it “TV” or “Computer”. This device really is like that.

I guess this device do not impress you in first-look if you saw N95 8GB, but 16GB(!) interior memory and huge 2,8, screen size will change your opinion. Features that including being the support to MPEG-4, WMV and FLV, the USB connection 2,0 high-levels and the WLAN support and HSDPA.
Receiver DVB-H that was integrated (especially in several countries) offered the presentation of the direct TV with programs that tar-update automatically.

That’s not everything, if you somehow fill all 16GB of interior memory, you can add 8GB MicroSD card in your device.

We can talk much about N96 but in fact he do not have much differences to compare with N95. Of course if we ignore fact listed above. However, fact still fact - at the moment, Nokia N96 is the best N-series phone.
